Brush Lettering with Ivan Castro

  • Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography 950 South Raymond Avenue Pasadena, CA, 91105 (map)

In this special hands-on immersive workshop, you will practice brush-written calligraphy, a technique that has varied expressive possibilities. You’ll understand the logic and basic technique of the fude brush (a.k.a. brush pen) as well as the basic alphabet. Then we’ll experiment on variations on the formal shapes to make them expressive to develop a personal project.

About this Workshop

This workshop is ideal for beginners because the starting point is “how to hold a pen.” No worries if you’re never done calligraphy before. It's also great for intermediate and advanced calligraphers, given that we’ll get to explore the endless possibilities of the brush pen. You’ll learn brush skills you can use in your calligraphy, lettering and design projects, such as greeting cards, signs, wedding invitations, punk rock gig posters, you name it.

This workshop will be held at the HMCT at the South Campus @ ArtCenter College of Design.
