The basics of characters. Historical origins of language and writing. Identifying and classifying typefaces. In this class, you’ll earn your degree with measurements, type anatomy, history, and classifications.

About the INSTRUCTOR

Michael Stinson is a partner at Ramp Creative. With 20 years in the field of design, his identity and annual report work has been recognized by CommArts, Mohawk Paper, TDC, Graphis, etc. Conversely, he’s served on the juries for the Ad Club, Graphis, the One Show Design and the Young Ones.

ABOUT THIS SESSION

The Basics: Characters & Words is a beginning lecture-demonstration class for the type enthusiast, design dabbler, beginning design student or junior designer who possesses the basic knowledge about graphic design. You'll learn:

  • What is type and where does it come from
  • About the types of serifs, stories and other terms
  • The importance of horizontal and vertical rhythm
  • Absolute and relative measurements, how and when to use each
  • Classifications & anatomy and why you should know these!

PREREQUISITES

Participants must have a basic understanding of visual design. Previous participation in either college-level design classes, working experience in the graphic design field, or an understanding of Adobe InDesign or Illustrator is helpful. Graduates of this class may take any offered beginning level workshops.

CANCELLATIONS & RESCHEDULING

If you can’t make it, email us at least 24 hours in advance to move your registration to another class date of your choice. Full refunds will be honored only if a cancellation is requested seven (7) days or more prior to the original scheduled event.
