I try to teach my students to understand the feeling of type, and the only way to learn is to put your hands on it. Typesetting is like trying to hold an octopus in your hands.
It is a moving, delicate, and beautiful animal. It will ebb and flow and sometimes slip out. You've got to hold onto it, while massaging and finessing the overall shape as well as the details. Without the ability to grasp the copy and design it so it reinforces the communication goals of the piece, you've got slimy mess.
I teach how to work with minute details in InDesign and ways to speed up typesetting and production in Class 3 | The Details: Pages & Typesetting.
